Passages
Daryl Duell
, a young member of Local 15, passed away on Saturday, June 25th, after his canoe overturned near B.C. He got his membership through Int'l. organizing and has been out on the road with Networks Productions shows for the last 5-6 years. A service was held in his hometown of Longview, WA on July 8th.
Kevin Beaty passed away on Saturday, July 16, at his home. He was 46 years old. Kevin worked primarily at the Seattle Center, for many years as the Stage Crew Chief and, most recently, for Public Programs. He is survived within the Local by his father, Rex, a retired member, and his brother, Keith, a Seattle Center Stage Lead. A memorial was held for Kevin on July 30
th at the Seattle Center. Attendance showed how many lives Kevin touched in his short time with us. He will be missed by all who knew him.
While not members of the Local, two long time friends passed away recently. Gary Vaughn, once a permit worker and for the last few years the Technical Director for the Seattle International Children's Festival, passed away June 16
th from complications after heart surgery. A memorial was held for Gary at the Seattle Center August 1st. Glynn Ross passed away in Tuscon on July 21st of complications from a stroke. He was 90. As General Director of Seattle Opera from its inception until 1983 and the man who created PNB, Local 15 can't express his importance to our continuing existence. Please take a moment today to remember these fine men who touched the Local 15 family.
Death Assessments
All members
need to pay the $5 death assessments for Brothers Duell and Beaty as soon as possible. These assessments are very important to the families in their times of need. Please send a check for $10 today!
ByLaw Reminder
This is a reminder that under the ByLaw passed at the February 2005 meeting, all members are required to call their respective Business Agent when they do work that is not covered by a Union contract. Tracking these jobs may help the Union secure more work.
This means all members and any work within the Local's jurisdiction: film projection or maintenance, theatre, shop, concert, convention or tradeshow. You need to call not later than the day after the first day of work or within forty-eight (48) hours of receiving the call, whichever comes first. Projectionists need to call Brian at 206-441-1540 and Stagehands need to call Bill's voicemail at 206-901-3762. For more details, please see the March 2005 newsletter and the January & February meeting minutes.

Safety Committee
Brother Don Ferguson was injured last month at Marymoor Park. Don was climbing down a ladder from the spot platform when the ladder became detached and threw him to the ground. He suffered injuries to his back, face and shoulder. He was immediately transported to the hospital, where he spent several days. Don is at home now, but we have been told that he has a few months of rehabilitation ahead of him. I would expect Don would enjoy receiving messages and cards from his brothers and sisters as he mends. A full report on the accident is being prepared by King County and neither the employer nor we have yet received it. At the employer's request, I will be sending a letter to the county requesting a copy of the report.
Apprentice Program
Apprentice classes scheduled for August are Labor History with Bill Wickline and Basic Wiring & Electricity with Dave Misner. Everyone needing these classes should have been contacted already by the class administrator and given the necessary information.
Business Representative
The job outlook for Local 15 continues to brighten. As I prepare this report on July 29th, we have everyone working who wants to work. The future seems good after our struggle for the past few years. As many of you are aware our International Convention was held during the week of July 18th. Attending the Convention, besides myself, were President Horton, Secretary Gervais, and Vice President Pete Perchinsky. It was a great convention, with all Local 15 delegates involved in important committees.
It is pleasing to note that our International continues to work on the National Scene in trying to secure work for all of the locals. The International has seen an increase of 10% in membership over the past few years. I will have more to report at the August membership meeting.    In Solidarity, Bill Wickline
Please help a brother in need! Urge State Rep Joe McDermott to pressure L&I for a decision in Karl deJong's open case. Contact his asst. Matt Judge at 206-923-5475 and ask him to help Karl.

Primary contact will be by email, if you don't have it and want to camp, please leave a message in the office. The usual cost is around $20 a night. The office will be closed August 22-25.
On the Job
Happily, many of us have been on calls recently working for corporate clients like Boeing and Microsoft. Unhappily, we have also seen fellow workers sent home from these jobs for inappropriate behavior. Please be aware that a certain decorum is required for any jobsite where a client is present. Use common sense when you dress for these calls, as well as on the jobsite. No yelling and cursing is allowed, absolutely no threatening or harassment of any kind, don't take food from any table unless it has been okayed by your Payroll Steward or the Employer, don't fraternize with clients or the public. Remember, you represent Local 15 and are there to work, even if you are standing by or waiting for your next change. Make the Local proud and help ensure that we can continue to work industrials, tradeshows and conventions.

Another jobsite issue that has come up a lot lately is the issue of job safety. Every worker carries the same responsibility to be aware of and report unsafe conditions to the Job and/or Payroll Steward. When an unsafe situation is reported, it is up to the steward(s) to find a remedy immediately and, failing that, the workers should refuse to perform the work until the situation is made safe. Often, our safety is undermined by road crews who are in a hurry to get out. Don't fall prey to guys yelling at you to hurry up. Remember, you are responsible for working safely. Watch out for the person in front of you when pushing boxes and be very careful on and around ramps. If you can't stand up to the road crew, get help from your fellow workers or your steward. It's no shame to ask for help.
Rules
A new rule passed at the July meeting allows Apprentices to be dispatched to certain calls to fulfill requirements of their craft review boards.
The Rules Committee, chaired by Tim Wratten, needs at least one more volunteer to complete the committee. The committee meets once a month, when required to review proposals for changes to the C&B and the Stage Dispatch Rules. Please contact Tim to volunteer at tim@eskimo.com.

To get pre-approval for volunteer hours, bring a volunteer opportunity to the local's attention, or sign up to receive notification of volunteer opportunities at outreach@ia15.org

NEWSREEL by Brian Whitish & Pete Kerchinsky
Hi out there in projector land. Its time for your reminders. If you haven't paid 3rd quarter yet, do it asap. You should have received a post card in the mail telling you about the new website for the H&W and pension. The website is iatsenbf.org. From there you will be able to find fund doctors and dentists, check on your account, pay if you owe for a quarter, and claim forms. Not all features are available now but it should be fully functional in October. Please make sure you read whatever is sent to you by Local 15 or the International. My time to react to problems with the H&W fund is very short, only 10 working days. So read your mail!!! If you have any address changes or need to pay dues here is the usual info. The address is: 2800 1st Avenue Room 231, Seattle, WA 98121. If you need to contact office manager Betsy Harris her email is office@ia15.org or you can call her at 206-441-1515. In the month of August, Pete, Larry Price and I will be meeting to finalize tests for our new training program. I could use help if anybody would like to help out. We are changing our training program format to better fit in with the stage apprentice program. That's all for now – Brian
I attended the propjectionist caucus held during the convention in Hawaii. Delegates from various locals in the US and Canada gave a state of the trade report from their area. Most reporting few, if any, projection jobs left with the major theatre chains. Those with contracts with AMC/Cineplex chains did not know what to expect if a proposed merger goes through. The main topic of discussion was digital projection, with many saying the way to keep our jobs is re-training on digital. Mahalo, Pete
