Attention All Members
Please read the latest IA Bulletin for a review of your rights under Federal law. The Local's Objection Procedure is available in the office. You must withdraw from the Local to become an objector.
Members of the Local have a duty to attend Local Union meetings and speak on any and all issues affecting the Local, the IATSE and its members; participate in formulating union policy and influence the nature of the Local's activities and the direction of its future; nominate and vote for candidates for Local office and run for Local office; and participate in contract ratification and strike votes. Except for January and July, only members can attend meetings.
International Convention
The International and the District One convention will be held this year in mid-July. Your elected delegates are Bill Wickline, Laurel Horton, Diana J. Gervais and Pete Kerchinsky. Compensation for delegates will be decided at the July meeting.
Any member who has business for Local 15 to address at the International or the District convention should bring it up at the June 6th meeting or contact a delegate before the end of June.
Local 15 Softball Game, Monday 6/13
Brother Phil Greenwald has organized a Local 15 softball game on Monday, 6/13 at Dahl Playfield (77th and 25th Ave NE in Ravenna). He has reserved Field #2 from 5 pm 7 pm. The Local approved $50 to rent the field and Brother Jack Taylor donated $50 of his own money to help out with snacks and soft drinks. This is a public park, so alcohol consumption is not legal use your best judgment. Please bring your glove, balls, bats or any other equipment you have to use or share.

Due to the July 4th holiday and the Labor Day Holiday, meeting dates will be changed all summer. The July Meeting will be held on Monday, July 11th, the August meeting will be held on Monday, August 8th and the September meeting will be held on Monday, September 12th. All meetings will be held at 5:30 pm. As usual, the July meeting will be open to all workers in good standing, regardless of membership. Safety Committee
The Safety Committee will resume its old schedule of meeting at 4:30pm in the meeting hall prior to the monthly Local 15 meeting. We have to accommodate our members who work during the day and were not able to attend the meeting at lunch hour. Anyone who wants to can serve on the Safety Committee, please contact Bill Wickline.
Government Paperwork
When you go to work for any employer you have not been employed by in the last year, be prepared to fill out new W-4's and I/9's. The employer is required by law to see 1 or 2 pieces of ID for your I/9. For complete information, please search for W-4 or I/9 on the web.
The I/9 needs for list A: either a passport or a permanent resident alien card. If you don't have one of those (or others on that list) you have to go to B and C: drivers license or state id card, and then a Social Security card - these are the usual documents. Several more are listed, but those are the usual. Although most employers accept copies, some may need to see original documents. You will not be paid until you fill out the necessary paperwork.
W-4's should be updated every time you move. The Employer can - and usually does - require someone with the "exempt" status to complete one annually, at the 1st of the year. And, if your status changes, from single to married, for instance, you'd want your Employer to have one.
In the Office
I'll be out of the office July 11 thru 15 and then July 20 thru 22. This will be further complicated by the fact that the July membership meeting will be on July 11th due to the 1st Monday in July being a holiday. Bill and Laurel will be in and out of the office Monday through Thursday of that week and Flossie should be in on Friday, the 15th, as well as the following Friday, the 22nd. Please plan ahead and know that I will be back on the 25th!! Always call 206-441-1515 before coming down to the office.

Fair Share Notice
It's June and it's time again to issue invitations to join the Local. If you worked 750+ hours last year or 1000+ hours in the last 2 years, look for a letter in your mailbox very soon. If you decide not to join, you are required to pay the fair share amount, which is equal to the initiation fee and quarterly dues, in addition to your percentage dues.
The information in this letter is very important and may affect your future employment with the Local. Please read it right away and respond by the deadline. Ignoring any correspondence from the Local creates a huge administrative burden and is actually a waste of your own $$.
All Local 15 workers have the right to pay a fair share fee instead of dues. If you object to use of your dues for charitable or social causes, you may become a dues objector. The Objection Procedure, as well as sample objector letters, is available in the office. First time objections and renewals must be received in the office by June 30th every year.
If you are interested in supporting the Union before we make you, anyone who has accumulated at least 750 total hours with Local 15, and is not a member already, can make application for membership at any time. There is no need to wait until we ask you to join. You are the Local, join today!!
Business Representative
As summer fast approaches we seem to be getting through more of our open contract maze. I feel we should be wrapping up several of the agreements within the next few weeks. Those are One Reel, Big 4, Meydenbauer Center, Seattle Children's Theatre and Rise Up Productions. We are also nearing deals with Nasco and SAM. Some of the other open contracts may take a little longer like the City of Seattle, which is currently in mediation, Everett Events Center, Washington Center for the Performing Arts and Auburn Performing Arts Center. I feel we should have all our open agreements finished by the end of August. Contracts coming up later in the year include ACT Theatre and Lakeside Productions. I will be looking for your input on those agreements over the next couple of months.
In Solidarity, Bill Wickline

Jack Woody Memorial Fund
Three years ago when Brother Jack Woody passed away, Local 15 is set up a fund in his name to provide assistance for workers to pay their initiation fees. The Local takes up a collection each year on Memorial Day. Another Memorial Day has just passed. Please give generously to the Jack Woody Memorial Fund today. To make a donation, drop by the office or send a check payable to the Jack Woody Memorial Fund. The fund is administered by the Executive Board, based on need. You may apply for assistance by writing a letter to the Board.
Stagehand Ethics
Ethics do come up in our business, especially regarding access to venues. Unless you are working or an arrangement has been made with management, a Stagehand should never use his or her position to gain access to a venue or performance. This includes stages, dressing rooms, theatre buildings, parking areas or any other area not accessible to the public.
Outreach
If you would like notice of volunteer opportunities by email or have ideas for ways that Local 15 can give back to the theatre community, email Alex at outreach@ia15.org. Remember, get your volunteer hours approved in advance. The volunteer hour forms are located in the office.
Organizing Rep
The Organizing efforts have been put on hold for a while, as we attempt to negotiate new agreements at the four venues we organized over the past year. We are still interested in new information on other venues that have not been organized, so please, keep the office updated.
City Personnel Policy
The City of Seattle has enacted a new personnel policy in response to a potential lawsuit. If you work 916+ hours for the City this calendar year, you will receive city benefits in lieu of the current premium pay you receive as an intermittent. If you work for the City a lot and want to keep your current benefits and premium, keep track of your hours over the year.
Dispatch
Our new dispatcher is Katy Fogg. Both Katy and Liz Sloat will be working throughout the summer while Krysten works the Ring (if it gets to her). With multiple people working Dispatch, please remember to always use 206-443-0740 to reach the dispatcher on duty.
Tacoma News
Interested workers can access the Tacoma Performing Arts Steering Committee and Subcommittees on the web at www.cityoftacoma.org/ArtsSC/. Many Local 15 workers are a part of these committees. The Local has joined forces with the Tacoma Arts community to seek improvements for all who work in the performing arts.
