Phil Howard
As most of you know, Brother Phil Howard passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, 9 August. He was 57 years old. He was on a boating trip on the Ponderay River in the NE corner of Washington State with his friend Dave when he unexpectedly died. The family held a traditional memorial at his mother's church in late August. His ashes are scattered in several places including Sunset Hill Cemetery on a wall near his dad; check the cemetery office for plot location.
The Local is planning a very casual memorial gathering next Monday, 10 October in the Bagley Wright Theatre from 6 pm until 9 pm. There will be no speeches or formal program of any kind but just a time and place for Brothers and Sisters who loved Phil to get together and remember him. Everyone is encouraged to bring pictures, stories, memories to share. Please attend if you can.

Outreach
If you would like notice of volunteer opportunities by email or have ideas for ways that Local 15 can give back to the theatre community, email Alex at outreach@ia15.org. Remember to get all your volunteer hours approved in advance. The volunteer hour forms are available in the office.
Apprentice Program
As most of you know, JulieAnn Clifton was appointed Interim Apprentice Board Chair last month. She has scheduled a meeting for 7 October during which the committee will conduct 6 and 18 month progress reviews for the Apprentices.
The committee will also be sending out a mailing to all apprentices outlining the new discipline procedures approved by the members at the September meeting. Once the new policies have been mailed out, they will be in force.
Beneficiary Info
Betsy has typed up a sheet with info for a member's family/beneficiary. She has them in the office and recommends that you stop by and fill one out. The sheet can be kept in your member file for easy reference. If you are so inclined, this sheet could also be kept with your important papers. Betsy also wants to remind people to check their beneficiary information. Make sure your info is up to date on your 401(k) and the District One death benefit. Betsy has both forms in the office.
5th Ave Parking
In case you don't know, all day parking for 5th Avenue Theatre calls can be found at the Post Office garage, in the Cobb Building on Union between 3rd & 4th. Park there before the call and purchase parking scrip before lunch break at the theatre for $5.50 each; see any staff member for details.

The Cue Sheet
October 2005
Business Representative
As most of you know we have been extremely busy for the past month. Our capacity to supply workers has been challenged and we have come through with flying colors with a whole lot of long hours and hard work to show for it. I want to thank our dispatchers for their dedication and hard work. I would also like to thank all of the members and workers of Local 15 who made many sacrifices to fill the large number of calls. YOU WERE GREAT!
Local 15 is currently negotiating the following labor agreements: The Meydenbauer Center (wage opener), ACT Theatre (entire contract), Lakeside Management (entire contract), NASCO (first time contract), Washington Center for the Performing Arts (first time contract), Seattle Art Museum (first time contract), Audio Productions (first time contract), City of Seattle (should be finished by November 1st). We have just concluded a first time agreement with the Auburn School District for the Auburn Performing Arts Center, which was ratified at the October meeting. We had to have two mediations sessions with a state mediator before we reached a tentative agreement. The Auburn School District agreement gives us a hallmark for future organizing in other school districts with theatres. If you have questions about any contract, please give me a call. In Solidarity, Bill Wickline

AV Classes
Jack Taylor will be teaching AV classes on October 19th and 20th for anyone who wants to be able to do AV work. We are getting more and more AV calls now and need to train competent people so that we can equip ourselves well on these calls and keep the work coming.
If you are interested in gaining some new skills you will need for the AV Skills Assessment test (being given in early 2006) please sign up for one of the following four classes. The classes will be held at the Seattle Center in the Center House (we'll email you with the room # when we learn it).
To those Apprentices who took the introductory AV class last year this class will touch on a few of the same things but will include new material (such as PowerPoint and the set up of LCD projectors) that was not part of the previous class. It will be a good refresher for all. If you have AV as one of your Apprentice classes please bring your book to have signed.
Please send email to avgeeks@aol.com to sign up for one of the following days and times: (Note: All the classes are the same so you only have to sign up for one.)

Wednesday, 10/19 - 2pm – 5pm
Wednesday, 10/19 - 7pm – 10pm
Thursday, 10/20 - 12pm-3pm
Thursday, 10/20 - 5pm – 8pm

ACT Theatre Payroll
Anyone working at ACT needs to be sure to make the appropriate information and documentation available in order to fill out your I9/W-4 documents. Also, ACT is no longer mailing paychecks. They can be picked up at the theater or direct deposited to the employee's bank (the fast and easy option). In order to participate in direct deposit the theater will need to fill out a direct deposit form and provide a voided check.
Home Loan Program
One of the biggest obstacles of homeownership is saving enough money for the down payment and closing costs. In 1998 the AFL-CIO Housing Investment Trust partnered with HomeStreet Bank's Affinity Lending Center to develop a special mortgage program for union members. IATSE Local 15 members can take advantage of this special loan program with their competitive rates and free homeownership education.
The Labor's Home Loan Program offers many types of financing programs for the purchase, refinance or construction/renovation of new or existing homes. This program is available only through the Affinity Lending Center at HomeStreet Bank. For more information, please call the Affinity Lending Center Monday-Friday 8am-9pm or Saturday 9am-5pm. Organizing
Over the next few weeks it is my intent to reorganize the Organizing Department of Local 15. I feel we must make some changes if we are to be effective throughout the Puget Sound area. In the meantime, if any one has contact information on any unorganized employer, please contact me so we can discuss it. In addition, I will be approaching those of you who have a history of working with unorganized employers and requesting your help. We have to organize the unorganized operations in order to level the playing field of our contractual employers. Bill Wickline
Payroll Stewards and Jobsite Safety
Each of us is responsible for safety on the job, our own safety and the safety of those around us. As the Union's supervisor and administrator of the crew, the Payroll Steward is ultimately responsible for the safety of the entire crew. Payroll Stewards should have their first aid and CPR certifications, know the location of the nearest hospital and the employer's policy for handling accidents, if there is one. It is also the Payroll Steward's responsibility to make sure the employer provides required safety equipment, first aid kits and a safe working environment for the whole crew. Finally, the Payroll Steward should have accident report forms and know how to handle jobsite accidents. There may be times when a Payroll Steward has to stand up for the crew's safety to an employer and should be prepared to refuse to complete the work until it can be done safely. The Local's new Payroll Steward qualifications and training will have a greater focus on safety than in the past.
WSCTC
If you work at the convention center, do not try to bypass the security office: sign in and get a wristband. The security office is located at Pike and 9th Avenue. If you enter the facility elsewhere, take the elevator down and check in.
